What this tool does
Calculate the SHA-256 fingerprint of UTF-8 text.
How to use it
Paste text and select Process on an HTTPS page. The output is a 64-character hexadecimal digest. Do not use an unsalted hash of a password for password storage.
Privacy and limitations
Processing takes place in your browser. Avoid pasting sensitive data into a shared device. Results are not stored by this tool.
Example and output format
On an HTTPS page, hashing the exact text “abc” returns the 64-character hexadecimal digest ba7816bf8f01cfea414140de5dae2223b00361a396177a9cb410ff61f20015ad. The output is lowercase; changing even one character changes the digest.
Input is exact UTF-8 text
The tool hashes the text as entered, including leading or trailing spaces and line breaks; it does not trim or normalize it. To compare digests, use the same character encoding and exact text on both sides.
Appropriate uses and limits
A digest can help compare whether two text inputs match, but a hash alone does not prove who produced the text. Do not store passwords as unsalted SHA-256 digests; use a dedicated password-hashing scheme in the system responsible for authentication.
Questions about this tool
Why is the hash tool unavailable on this page?
SHA-256 uses the browser Web Crypto API, which requires a secure HTTPS connection and a supported browser.
Will the same text always produce the same digest?
Yes, when the exact UTF-8 text is identical. Leading spaces, trailing spaces, line breaks or different characters produce a different digest.
